East Tyrol, or East Tirol, is an exclave of the Austrianstate of Tyrol, sharing no border with North Tyrol, the main part of the state. The reason for East Tyrol's situation is the fact that Austria had to cede Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol to Italy according to the Treaty of Saint Germain following World War I. In Austria, East Tyrol borders Carinthia and Salzburg, while it also shares borders with the Italian provinces of Bolzano-Bozen (Region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) and Belluno (Region of Veneto). Its capital is Lienz. The district (Bezirk) of Lienz is the only one in East Tyrol. Image File history File links Map of Tyrol, Lienz district highlighted Original by de:Benutzer:Jensens, 1. ... The mountainous region neighbors to Vorarlberg in the west and Salzburg and Carinthia in the east.
Historically, Tyrol was a County of the Holy Roman Empire, later the Austrian Empire and finally a Kronland of Austria-Hungary, which extended beyond the boundaries of today's state.
The Tyrol is a historical region in Western Central Europe, which includes the Austrian state of Tyrol (consisting of North Tyrol and EastTyrol) and the Italian regions known as the South Tyrol and Trentino.
Often glorified as the Tyrol's national hero, Andreas Hofer, the leader of the uprising, was executed in 1810 in Mantua, having lost a third and final battle against the French and Bavarian forces.
The northern part, consisting of the geographically separate regions of Northern Tyrol and Eastern Tyrol, is today one of nine federal states of the Federal Republic of Austria called Tyrol (consisting of North Tyrol and EastTyrol).
