The Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunni), lives in grassland and grassy woodlands of south Victoria and Tasmania in Australia. It weighs an average of 700g and is easily distinguished from all other bandicoot species from three to four whitish bars across the rump. It is not aggressive and lives alone. Males occupy large territories and only consort with females for mating. This species is nocturnal. It emerges from its nest at dusk to forage for earthworms and other invertebrates. It uses its long nose to probe deep into the soil and then digs eagerly when it locates food. The produces on average 2 to 3 young after a 12 day gestation — this is one of the shortest gestation periods of any mammal. The young are weaned at 55 days. Up to five litters can be produced throughout the year, although reproduction is dpressed during the summer and ceases altogether during times of drought. The Victorian Eastern Barred Bandicoot population began to decline at European settlement when native grasslands were cleared and modified for farming practises, predation my introduced foxes and to a lesser extent domestic and wild cats has further reduced this population, drought is also considered a threatening process. The Victorian subspecies is critically endangered, and is now only found at three reintroduction sites (Hamilton Community Parklands, Mooramong and Mount Rothwell). A samll wild population persisted in Hamilton for many years but is now considered extinct, it is estimated that only 150 of the Victorian Eastern Barred Bandicoot remains. Captive breeding commenced in 1989; since then reintroductions have occured into eight reserves of which some are surrounded by a predator barrier fence; Woodlands Historic Park (population now presumed extinct) Hamilton Community Parklands and Mount Rothwell.
