The Eastern Black Crested Gibbon (Nomascus nasutus) is a gibbon that was once widespread in China and Vietnam. It became extinct on the mainland of China in the 1950's; now roughly only 20 gibbons survive on Hainan Island. The species was also thought to have become extinct in Vietnam in the 1960's but was rediscovered in 2002 where 26 individuals were found. It is the most critically endangered primate. Its demise has come from deforestation of its habitat, encroachment, and poaching.
