Eastland County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 18,297. Its county seat is Eastland6. Eastland is named for William Mosby Eastland, a soldier during the Texas Revolution and the only officer to die as a result of the Black Bean executions.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,414 km˛ (932 mi˛). 2,398 km˛ (926 mi˛) of it is land and 15 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,297 people, 7,321 households, and 5,036 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km˛ (20/mi˛). There are 9,547 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 91.03% White, 2.18% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.83% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 10.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,321 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 22.30% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 20.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $26,832, and the median income for a family is $33,562. Males have a median income of $25,598 versus $17,112 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,870. 16.80% of the population and 12.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
