Eat the Document is a rarely exhibited documentary of Bob Dylan's 1966 tour of England with the Hawks. It was shot under Dylan's direction by D. A. Pennebaker, whose groundbreaking documentary Dont Look Back chronicled Dylan's 1965 British tour. It was originally commissioned for the ABC television series Stage '66. Dylan himself, together with his longtime associate Howard Alk,and Robbie Robertson of The Band, edited Eat the Document. While technically deficient and often poorly photographed, the film has its high moments (literally and figuratively), including excellent concert footage and exquisite renderings of some of Dylan's greatest songs of the period. It was never given a general theatrical release or made commercially available on any form of home video, but unauthorized copies circulate among Dylan collectors. A lengthy outtake featuring a drug-impaired Dylan in a taxi with John Lennon also circulates among collectors. Bob Dylan's Eat the Document is a documentary that captures the madness that ensued during Dylan and The Hawks' 1966 tour of Europe in which Dylan transformed himself from an acoustic folk singer to a rock ‘n’ roll musician.
Eat the Document was edited specifically for network television, with breaks planned for commercials to be inserted; because it was turned down by ABC, it has rarely been seen in its intended form.
Eat the Document presents a multitude of Dylans for the viewer to contemplate: weary and fatigued on tour; jamming with guitarist Robbie Robertson and country legend Johnny Cash; riding around with John Lennon; and confronting a dubious press and public.
