Eccleston is a Civil Parish and historic township within the Metroplitan Borough of St Helens,Merseyside. The historic township of Eccleston was much larger and it extended into the modern Town of St Helens.This part was united with Parr, Sutton and part of Windle to form the Borough of St Helens in 1868. Bordered by Windle, and large areas of open countryside, the village contains the Mere, a large lake used for fishing, sailing and bird watching. There are a number of good schools covering all ages from primary to High School. Plenty for sports fans with [Grange Park Golf Club],and the home of St Helens RLFC on Knowsley Road is close enough to hear the roar of the crowd on summer evenings. An alternative roar of the lions at the nearby Knowsley Safari Park can also be heard sometimes. Blessed by a number of pubs, shops and a public library, the village is also home to a local convent(techically a monastery though home to carmelite nuns), the Carmel of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, (or Help as is more usual in the USA), founded in 1914.There are several churches in the Civil Parish including Christ Church C of E, St James C of E, Oor Lady Help of Christians R.C.(known locally as "Portico"), Eccleston Methodist Church and St Julie's R.C. StHelens is a town in the traditional county of Lancashire and the metropolitan county of Merseyside in North West England.
It was formed from the townships of Eccleston, Windle, Parr, and Sutton, all of which were in the Parish of Prescot and was named for St. Helen's parish church in Hardshaw within Windle, about 12 miles (19 km) north east of Liverpool.
StHelens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester line is 2 miles (3 km) south of the town centre.
