ECHAGUE, Isabela – The February 23 "arrest" of a congressman and two mayors here by a platoon of New People’s Army (NPA) fighters has rekindled fears that far from being an insignificant force, the NPA has become bolder and would now operate in areas that the military says it has secured.
Isabela was the first expansion area for the NPA in 1970, when key political and military cadres from Central Luzon pitched camp in this province and established its first guerrilla fronts in Northern Luzon.
Giorgidi Aggabao, Echague Mayor Leoncio Kiat, San Agustin Mayor Virgilio Padilla and Isabela Electric Cooperative manager Mathew Alindada were held by the NPA guerrillas for three hours in Barangay Linimusu, a remote barangay of this town, and all their bodyguards were disarmed.
