The Mauritius Parakeet (Psittacula echo) is the sole survivor of the Psittacula species which inhabited the Southern Indian ocean islands near Madagascar. The total wild population is less than 100 individuals, most of which are males. It is among the rarest extant psittacids in the world. The females of this species posess a black beak which distinguishes them from the males which have a red beak. This feature is notably absent in the Rose-ringed Parakeet and the Alexandrine Parakeet which it closely resembles. However it is found in the Redbreasted Parakeet, the Derbyan Parakeet and the Nicobar Parakeet which are morphologically dissimilar. The Echoparakeet is the last surviving member of the genus on the islands of the western Indian Ocean; other species or subspecies existed on the Seychelles and the other Mascarene islands, Rodrigues and Reunion, but are all now extinct.
The Echo appears to be a strictly arboreal forager, nesting in natural cavities in native trees, and differs from the Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) in its larger and bulkier body shape, shorter wings and tail, and more raucous call.
Echos are still being reared under ringnecks, although there was s severe scare in 1993 when several of the foster birds and their own offspring proved serologically positive for polyomavirus.
We need to also be planting fast growing native species which we know Echoes love such as bois de lait and palm trees, all of which will provide fruit in large quantities within 15 to 20 years.
What a season like this does remind us of is that Echoes are not out of the woods yet but still have a couple of large obstacles left to get past, lack of good quality food during some years being by far and away the most important.
Gabriella is the first of the release birds to fledge a chick (Pippin in 1997), and is now the first Echo to use and fledge chicks from an artificial nest box.
