Echunga is a small town in the Adelaide Hills located 34km south-east of Adelaide. The town reputedly takes its name from an Aboriginal word 'eechungga' which may mean either 'a short distance' or 'close by'.


In 1852 Jupiter Creek near Echunga was the site of the first gold discovery in South Australia which caused considerable excitement. For a brief time Echunga prospered and it has been estimated that at its peak it had grown to a population in excess of 1200. Today Echunga is a sleepy little town.
