Eclipse Cigarettes are made/invented by R. J. Reynolds. They were first tested with consumers in 1994, and brought into limited market distribution in 2000. They primarily heat tobacco, giving off a vapor, instead of burning it as traditional cigarettes do. This causes them to produce a lot less smoke (but they are not smoke-free), no ashes, and create a better environment around the user. Because of this attribute, they are marketed as "present[ing] less of a risk of certain smoking-related diseases".
Other medical associations [1] (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_2_1X_American_Cancer_Society_calls_for_removal_of_Eclipse_cigarette_from_marketplace_164.asp)[2] (http://www.charitywire.com/charity6/02379.html) claim that they are not as safe as their campaign presents it and should be removed from the marketplace: although they produce less tar and produce less second-hand smoke, this leads to a false sense of security when the cigarette still contains high amounts of carcinogens. Other concerns are that they produce more carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes. Eclipse reiterates by claiming that they are not trying to market a "safe" cigarette, only a better alternative.
