In addition, the pilot also contained some notable casting choices, with Donal Logue portraying Phil and Janeane Garofalo guest-starring as Ed's ex-wife Liz. Michael Ian Black replaced Logue as Phil in re-shot scenes of the first episode and for the entire series, and a number of different actresses played Liz in her few appearances (for example, Lea Thompson played the character in several episodes near the end of the series). Trivia - Ed had a number of running gags, such as Phil (Michael Ian Black) hatching ludicrous schemes usually to gain fame and/or fortune, and ten-dollar bets between Ed and Mike that would require one of them to do something extremely embarrassing.
- Ed creators/executive producers Jon Beckerman and Rob Burnett made a cameo appearance as reception guests at Carol and Ed’s wedding in the final episode.
- Several of the cast/crew who worked on Ed have turned up on Scrubs, starting with series star Tom Cavanagh who has a recurring role as Dan Dorian, the brother of central character J.D. (Zach Braff). Josh Randall guested in the fourth and fifth seasons as the love interest of Elliot (Sarah Chalke). Writer Mike Schwartz was a writer for the first season of Ed, and then moved onto Scrubs for all of its seven seasons, and an occasional performer on Scrubs. Mike Starr also guest starred on one episode of Scrubs.
- A number of pressure groups have begun to pop up on the internet trying to get Ed to be released on DVD in the UK. The network is considering a box-set release but nothing is set in stone.[citation needed]
