Edgefield County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 24,595. Its county seat is Edgefield6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,312 km˛ (507 mi˛). 1,300 km˛ (502 mi˛) of it is land and 12 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,595 people, 8,270 households, and 6,210 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km˛ (49/mi˛). There are 9,223 housing units at an average density of 7/km˛ (18/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 56.77% White, 41.51% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,270 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 15.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.12.
