Méndez began his career with El Nacional de Quito of his native Ecuador. He came to Mexico for the 2004 Clausura, joining Irapuato and immediately becoming an important player for the club, starting 16 games and scoring five goals during the Clausura. However, with Irapuato's relegation following the Apertura, Méndez moved to Santos, where he struggled to find a place, starting only six of 14 games, and scoring only two goals.
