Edmondo De Amicis (October 21, 1846—March 12, 1908), is a notable Italian novelist, journalist, and short-story writer.
De Amicis fought in the battle of Custoza during the Third Independence War, a defeat of Savoy forces in front of the Austrian Empire; the spectacle left him disappointed, and contributed to his later decision to leave military life.
The nationalist message visible in De Amicis' works was soon fused with a commitment to socialism (a trend visible within Heart).

AMICIS, EDMONDO DE (1846-1908), Italian writer, was born at Oneglia, in Liguria, on the 21st of October 1846.
After some schooling at Cuneo and Turin, he was sent to the Military School at Modena, from which he was appointed to a lieutenancy in the 3rd regiment of the line in 1865.
After the overthrow of the pope's temporal power in 1870, De Amicis retired from the army and devoted himself to literature, making his headquarters at Turin.
