Edmonton is a city located in Metcalfe County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,586. It is the county seat of Metcalfe County6.

Edmonton is located at 36°58'49" North, 85°37'13" West (36.980191, -85.620338)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.5 km˛ (2.9 mi˛). 7.4 km˛ (2.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,586 people, 686 households, and 410 families residing in the city. The population density is 215.6/km˛ (557.7/mi˛). There are 776 housing units at an average density of 105.5/km˛ (272.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.72% White, 1.95% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 686 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.1% are married couples living together, 17.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.77.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 73.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $18,807, and the median income for a family is $27,763. Males have a median income of $24,671 versus $18,646 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,384. 31.8% of the population and 29.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.5% of those under the age of 18 and 25.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
