Colonne studied at the Conservatory in Paris where he won first prizes in both harmony and violin. In 1858–67 he was first violinist at the Opéra in Paris. He and music publisher G. Hartman founded the Concert national de l'Odéon in 1873. In 1875 he founded the Association Artistique du Châtelet that became known as the Concerts Colonne. Former Conservatoire building (until 1911), still used as Théâtre du Conservatoire The Conservatoire de Paris, full contemporary name Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, has been central to the evolution of music in France and Western Europe. ...
