Laine directed the film The Unknown Soldier, in 1955, it was based on Väinö Linna's novel. The film was a big sensation in Finland. Laine also directed another film based on Väinö Linna's book, Under the North Star (1968). Both Edvin Laine and Rauni Mollberg have made their own movie versions of The Unknown Soldier based on Linna's novel.
Unfortunately, the only known English translation of the novel is faulty, with scenes removed and added for unspecified reasons, and is stylistically misleading as well.
