Edward Latimer Beach, Jr. (April 20, 1918 - December 1, 2002) was an American naval submarine officer and author. The son of Capt. Edward L. Beach, Sr. and Alice Fouché Beach, he was raised in Palo Alto, California and graduated second in his class from the United States Naval Academy in 1939. The United States Navy, also known as the USN or the U.S. Navy, is a branch of the United States armed forces responsible for conducting naval operations. ... During World War II, Beach served aboard the USS Trigger and USS Tirante, and commanded the USS Piper. From 1953 to 1957 he was naval aide to President Eisenhower. In 1959, Beach took command of the USS Triton (SSRN-586), which in 1960 circumnavigated the earth in 84 days without surfacing, an unprecedented feat. Beach retired from the Navy in 1966. Having been a graduate of the Naval War College, Beach then became the first to occupy the newly established Stephen B. Luce chair of naval science at the Naval War College. Subsequently he served for seven years as staff chairman of the Republican Senate Policy Committee. Beach wrote thirteen books, and is best known for his first novel, Run Silent, Run Deep (1955). A 1958 movie based on the novel was made starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, a movie Ned Beach was not particularly fond of. He would later say that Hollywood only bought the name and wasn't interested in producing an accurate account of life on submarines during WWII. He penned two sequels, Dust on the Sea (1972) and Cold is the Sea (1978). Beach also wrote several books on naval history, including Submarine! (1952), Around the World Submerged (1962), Keepers of the Sea (1983) with Fred J. Maroon, and Scapegoats: A Defense of Kimmel and Short at Pearl Harbor (1995).
