Encyclopedia > Edward Miliband

Edward Miliband (born 1969) is a British economist. He is currently chairman of the Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers, which directs the UK's long-term economic planning.

He was educated at Oxford. After a brief career in television journalism, he became a speechwriter and researcher for Labour politician Harriet Harman in 1993, and then Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown the following year. He has worked in an economic capacity since, although in 2003-4, he spent a year's sabbatical at Harvard University, as a visiting lecturer in government.

He is the younger brother of the MP and Cabinet Office Minister David Miliband, and the son of Marxist Ralph Miliband. Like his brother, he is often regarded as a rising star of the Labour Party, although he has not yet entered Parliament.
