Edward Pemberton Leach VC KCB KCVO, born Londonderry 2 April 1847 was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. On 17 March 1879 near Maidanah, Afghanistan, Captain Leach, with some men of the 45th Sikhs, was covering the retirement of the Survey Escort who were carrying a mortally wounded lieutenant. The captain charged with his small band a very large number of the enemy and in the encounter he killed two or three himself while receiving a severe wound in his left arm. He was the son of was a Sapper officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Leach, he was commissioned into the Corps in April 1866.
In 1899 he was GOC Belfast, and founded the Ballykinler training camp (still used today), he was GOC Scotland in 1904 and retired as General Sir Edward Leach, VC, KCB, KCVO in 1912.
In this encounter Captain Leach killed two or three of the enemy himself, and he recieved a severe wound from an Afghan knife in the left arm.
