Roshchmann was known to have committed unspeakable crimes during his tenure as SS commandant. He was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent Jews at Riga.

It is reported that Roshchmann had many women, children and elderly exterminated on their arrival to the camp claiming them to be more valuable dead. The dead's clothes, hair and teeth were a cash asset.

The Riga Camp inmates laboured eighteen hours a day at the camp workshops. The hunger and cold were constant brutalities that had broken their spirit to live. Roschmann took pleasure in starving people to death. He liked to destroy human beings. First their soul, then their body by kicking those about to die. He would strip them of their clothes and huddle them together before execution. He liked watching dogs feed on them while they were still breathing. After the war Roschmann later escaped. It is known that he slipped away wearing the uniform of a army corporal.
