He was known to friends as Bim. He was engaged at one point to Nancy Cunard, who broke it off and married. He was buried in France next to his friend Raymond Asquith.

He was the son of EdwardTennant, who became Lord Glenconner, and Pamela Wyndham, a writer, Lady Glenconner and later wife of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon.
His younger brother was the eccentric, Stephen Tennant.
