Edwin Abbey The Caldwell Gallery (150 words)
Edwin Abbey, born in 1852 in Philadelphia, was a self-taught illustrator and muralist.
In 1902 Abbey was appointed official court painter of coronation in Westminster Abbey.
Abbey's early work was rooted in naturalism but eventually became more stylized, often depicting flattened figures in a frieze-like arrangement, similar to techniques of Art Noveau.
John Singer Sargent's Edwin Austin Abbey (1321 words)
Edwin was born in Philadelphia, began his training as an artist under Isaac Williams, a portrait and landscape painter who had studied with John Neagle and Christian Schussele, a German-born history painter.
Abbey along with his other friends from Harpers tended to lean more towards the English Pre-Raphael Brotherhood style in their artwork of genera scenes which was popular in the public.
Abbey derived much of the inspiration for these from his long sojourns in the English countryside, especially, from 1885 to 1889, as one of the central figures in the artists' colony at Broadway (Hereford and Worcs), along with Parsons, Frank Millet (1846--1912) and John Singer Sargent.
