Here is how our village was named: "Eek" is the native term for our eyes. And in the fall during flood tide, the water reaches the top of the North riverbank, and was said to be reaching the "eyes" of the riverbank.

The Yup'ik name for Eek is Ekvicuaq, which means A Small Cliff, referring to the "little cliff" just upriver from the village where the Eek river cuts into the hill adjacent to the village.
