Education
Egan's school mascot is the viking, and the school colors are blue and gold. Egan's "rival school" is Blach. The teacher in charge is CONI CULLIMORE, and the counselor is Mr. Bruce McClain. Egan has considerably above average mathematics, language, and eighth grade history departments. In the 2004-2005 school year, a more advanced U.S. History seminar met before school on Wednesdays. Due to edits by Egan alumnus Daniel Moerner and the Egan history department, the course changed the next year to include a term paper, midterm exam and map test, and two final essays. It was instated by U.S. history teacher and community member Mr. Jon Hayman, who has stated that he will continue it at least as long as he remains teaching at Egan. The English department also tends to perform well in writing tests; a few students at the school earn the notable essay score of a six (out of a possible six) annually. 100% of the students currently attending Egan qualify for GATE level. In addition, Mr. Vincent Lewis teaches a Jazz Band, which meets to practice every Wednesday. In 2006, a Speech and Debate team was started, which was managed by Mr. Ben Rosen. It competed in a tournament against Blach, in which Egan did extremely well. Egan also has sports programs for boys and girls in soccer, basketball, tennis, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, and others. Eighth grade algebra teacher Ms. Laura Massaro is also the school's coach for their MathCounts competiton. Each year, Egan brings eight students to compete in this national math competition. Every Wednesday morning before school, applicants for the team attempt to solve challenging problems, and then face two qualifying tests in December and January. The school's computer and technology teacher is Jim Grijalva, who works to correct any school technology problems. The elementary schools that feed into Egan are Almond, Santa Rita, Covington, Bullis Charter School, and occasionally Springer and private schools. Every quarter, the school honors academic and student achievement in Egan. Like most high schools and colleges, Egan has "B", "A", and "4.0" honor rolls. The A Honor Roll is awarded to students with a 3.7 to 3.999 GPA. The B is given to 3.5 to 3.7 GPA. The 4.0 Honor Roll should be self-explanitory. Awards are also given to students for a variety of achievements, the most notable be the "Block E", which is earned through participation, grades, and service to the school. Parents can easily access their student's grades by checking Powerschool, an online progress report which many teachers update every day. Powerschool contains a detailed report of homework assignments, current school projects, grades on individual activities such as projects, tests, and participation, and teacher comments. School Rules Egan has many rules, such as the Zero Tolerance policy used by many schools in the United States. Students who do not dress appropriatly will be required to change into their P.E uniforms or wear suspenders. Also, no iPods, CD players, or other mp3 players are to be seen or heard during school unless directed by the teacher. Cell phone usage during school hours is also forbidden; the consequence of being caught with a ringing phone is the phone's confiscation for the day. Following Los Altos School District's policy, the school administration also requires all students returning from an absence to get a simple attendance yellow slip from the school office and have it signed by all teachers who teach a class that the student missed because he or she was absent. Besides some other obvious rules, Egan staff just wish that "Vikings Strive for Excellence." (The school motto.) In the United States and Canada, zero tolerance policies are applied in schools and other education venues. ...

Spirit Days Along with acemdemics, Egan has "spirit days", including two "blue and gold days", in which students dress in conventional to wacky blue and gold clothing. Many times, homeroom competitions are held to see which homeroom class is most spirited. The school's "Leadership" class holds three dances per year, and one movie night, the latter usually held in December, towards the end of the second quarter. On Movie Night, students gather to watch a movie chosen by a vote sometime earlier. Traditionally, Movie Night is between the first and second dance, and Leadership serves treats such as popcorn and candy. Another Egan custom is the "Mystery Bucket," started in 2005. Every year, teachers create a tape with small portions of Disney songs. Eight students and two teachers are then selected to hear a part of a song, and attempt to sing or recite the next line. If the student is successful, he or she is temporarily safe. If not, whatever is in the bucket placed behind his or her chair is dumped over his or her head. Contents can include food items such as applesauce, chocolate syrup, and spaghetti. The last competitor left wins a special prize purchased by the Leadership class. The prize is usually associated with Disney. The 2006 winner was Logan Breitbart, who narrowly beat out at-the-time eighth grader Jenna Klein. In 2005 (the debut year), the winner was a then-seventh grader, Laurel Newman. The Spring Fling, usually held in May, is the school's Talent Show. Many students perform in the Spring Fling. Once everyone's acts are finished, an ice cream social is held on the lawn outside. Acts include skits, dance numbers, singing, bands, and generally a couple of performances by teachers. Performances are limited to about two to three minutes. The Spring Fling is a popular tradition that appreciates the students' talents. During the October-November season, Egan holds an activity called "Holiday Faire" where students make their own crafts and items, hold a space, and sell their hard made items for money. It is a great time for students to socialize, meet new people, and learn business skills.
Ardis G. Egan Ardis G. Egan was the founder of Egan. He was also superintendent of the Los Altos School District during the 1950's. During his career, he spearheaded a campaign that resulted in the construction of of 14 new schools during his 21 year-term, as he watched the elementary school population grow from 350 to more then 6,000. Ardis also founded Los Altos's first service club, the Kiwanis Club, along with the help of Bert Schweitzer, Don Gordon, and Wallace Stanley. Earlier that same year, those four also organized the town's first Pet Parade, now an annual event in Los Altos. Ardis also started an annual Special Games for physically handicapped youth.
