Eileen Delaney was born in Dublin in 1932. She was educated at St. Kevin's School, the National College of Art, Grafton Academy of Dress Designing and the Abbey Theatre School of Acting. She first became involved in politics in 1974 when she was first elected to Dublin City Council. Eileen Desmond was born in Kinsale, County Cork, and educated locally at the Convent of Mercy in Kinsale, where she was one of only two girls in her class to sit the Leaving Certificate examination.
Her by-election victory caused Taoiseach Sean Lemass to dissolve the 17th Dáil and call a general election.
