Encyclopedia > Ejler Bille

Ejler Bille (born March 10, 1910) was born in Odder, Denmark. He studied at the Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen, with Bizzie Høyer 1930-32 and the Royal Danish Academy of Art, 1933. In 1934 he joined Linien, Corner in 1940 and CoBrA in 1949. He had concentrated on small sculptures, but moved into painting after joining CoBrA.


In 1969 he was Guest Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art.

Også i en anden sammenhæng kan man samenligne Ejler Bille med Matisse al den stund begge frembragte stilskabende skulpturer, der stadig står i skyggen af deres malerkunst.
For Bille drejer det sig om skulpturer skabt i begyndelsen af 1930´erne i træ, gips, sten eller bronze.
Det var ved diskussioner som disse, at Ejler Billes og Bjerke Petersens veje blev skilt, idet Bille ikke ville nøjes med at reformere motivet, men ville omskabe selve malemåden i en fri og spontan retning.
