The city of Eksjö most likely appeared sometime in the beginning of the 15th century, since its first mentioned in 1406. Today the city count a population of 10,110 souls (1996). The city emerged as a centre for the oxen trades but never really prospered and remained a small town until a heath outside the town became the point of essembly for the Smalandia Regiment (Smålands Regemente).
