El Dorado is a city located in Union County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,530. The city is the county seat of Union County6. Each May the South Arkansas Historical Foundation host a mayhaw festival in El Dorado.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.3 km² (16.3 mi²). 42.1 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,530 people, 8,686 households, and 5,732 families residing in the city. The population density is 510.9/km² (1,323.3/mi²). There are 9,891 housing units at an average density of 234.7/km² (607.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 53.66% White, 44.18% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,686 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.99.
