El Dorado is a city located in Union County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,530. The city is the county seat of Union County6. Each May the South Arkansas Historical Foundation host a mayhaw festival in El Dorado.


Geography

El Dorado is located at 33°12'49" North, 92°39'45" West (33.213521, -92.662553)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.3 km² (16.3 mi²). 42.1 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,530 people, 8,686 households, and 5,732 families residing in the city. The population density is 510.9/km² (1,323.3/mi²). There are 9,891 housing units at an average density of 234.7/km² (607.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 53.66% White, 44.18% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,686 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,045, and the median income for a family is $34,753. Males have a median income of $30,876 versus $19,211 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,332. 24.6% of the population and 20.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
