In 1989, El Pa韘 initiated several projects of collaboration with other newspapers in Europe. It participates in a joint network of informative resources with La Repubblica (Italy) and Le Monde (France). Since October 2001 a supplement in English of El Pa韘 is included in the Spanish version of the International Herald Tribune.
Its ideology has usually been aligned with the Socialist Party, though there have been clashes. Critics include it in alleged conspirations held by the Prisa manager Jes鷖 de Polanco.
ElPais, one of Spain's largest and most reliable papers, reported Tuesday that two sources at the Madrid hospital told its reporters that Castro had suffered complications after three failed surgeries to correct the problems.
ElPais reported that Castro suffered from diverticulitis, an inflammation of sacs on the large intestine that can rupture and cause bleeding.
He questioned whether ElPais' "medical sources" were indeed doctors, and he noted that the newspaper also cited another doctor, based elsewhere in Spain, for its report on Castro's health.
