Lake Forest is a city located in Orange County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,707.


Geography

Lake Forest is located at 33°38'30" North, 117°41'27" West (33.641642, -117.690733)1.


The city was created in 1991. Residents voted to name the city Lake Forest, after an expensive gated residential community, denying the longer claim to the territory by the community of El Toro. Since being founded, it has expanded its limits to include the new communities of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. The multiplicity of names often creates confusion: some people in the Portola Hills neighborhood, for example, can receive mail addressed to them at Portola Hills, Lake Forest, or Trabuco Canyon.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.7 km˛ (12.6 mi˛). 32.3 km˛ (12.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.95% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 58,707 people, 20,008 households, and 14,745 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,814.8/km˛ (4,698.8/mi˛). There are 20,486 housing units at an average density of 633.3/km˛ (1,639.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 76.02% White, 1.83% African American, 0.50% Native American, 9.70% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 7.51% from other races, and 4.24% from two or more races. 18.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 20,008 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $67,967, and the median income for a family is $75,121. Males have a median income of $52,019 versus $37,100 for females. The per capita income for the city is $28,583. 5.3% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


The City of Lake Forest hosts the headquarters for hard-drive maker Western Digital.


In 1994, Kathryn McCullough became Mayor, the first African-American mayor of any city in Orange County.

In February 1944, El Toro was designated as the major supply point for Marine air stations in California - a mission previously accomplished by NAS San Diego.
In 1950 MCAS El Toro was selected for development as a Master Jet Air Station and the permanent center of Marine aviation on the west coast of the United States.
