For other entries that have the same name, see Varda (disambiguation)

A character from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy universe, Middle-earth, Varda Elentįri is a Vala, wife of Manwė. Varda means sublime or lofty, and Elentįri means Star-queen. She is also known as Elbereth, Gilthoniel, The Kindler, Lady of the Stars, Queen of the Stars and Tintallė. Varda set the stars in the sky.

When Melkor first began to create his discord, Varda saw his mind, and hated him. Melkor fears and hates Varda the most out of the Valar.

Varda is said to be too beautiful for words. She resides with Manwė in Valinor. Varda created the stars with the dews from the vats of Telperion, a tree planted by Yavanna.

A Elbereth Gilthoniel (3217 words)
Notes Tolkien in Letters:278, "Though it is, of course, in the style and metre of the hymn-fragment [A Elbereth Gilthoniel], I think it is composed or inspired for his [Sam's] particular situation".
Note that the word Elbereth is not directly related to Quenya Varda "Lofty, Sublime" (the Quenya form of Elbereth would have been something like *Elenvarsi, while the Sindarin cognate of Varda would have been *Baradh or possibly *Bradh, but there is no evidence that these forms were in use as names of the Starqueen).
"O Elbereth Starkindler, from heaven gazing far, to thee I cry now beneath the shadow of death." A Elbereth Gilthoniel "o Elbereth Starkindler" as in the hymn (the first edition of LotR had o Elbereth instead of a Elbereth; this was an error that Tolkien later corrected, see Letters:278).
Elbereth Pyreneans (1389 words)
The affix Elbereth was originally associated with Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, and was chosen by myself after an intense bout of reading JR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
On arrival at Elbereth, he was somewhat out of condition, and soon after arriving developed a torsion, and underwent emergency surgery.
With Smudge being the result of careful line breeding, when a sire was chosen for her one and only litter, care was taken to select a suitable outcross, and the Breeds breed record holder, (at the time), Ch Briannor Amarillo, owned by Angela Smith was our selection.
