Elbert County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 20,511. The county's county seat is Elberton, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 970 km˛ (375 mi˛). 955 km˛ (369 mi˛) of it is land and 15 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.54% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,511 people, 8,004 households, and 5,770 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km˛ (56/mi˛). There are 9,136 housing units at an average density of 10/km˛ (25/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 66.94% White, 30.85% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,004 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.90% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.01.
