Elbert County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 20,511. The county's county seat is Elberton, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 970 km˛ (375 mi˛). 955 km˛ (369 mi˛) of it is land and 15 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.54% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,511 people, 8,004 households, and 5,770 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km˛ (56/mi˛). There are 9,136 housing units at an average density of 10/km˛ (25/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 66.94% White, 30.85% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,004 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.90% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,724, and the median income for a family is $34,276. Males have a median income of $27,221 versus $19,737 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,535. 17.30% of the population and 14.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.50% of those under the age of 18 and 17.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
