Eldred is a borough located in McKean County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 858.


Geography

Eldred is located at 41°57'24" North, 78°23'1" West (41.956725, -78.383579)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛). 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 858 people, 362 households, and 241 families residing in the borough. The population density is 376.4/km˛ (979.3/mi˛). There are 405 housing units at an average density of 177.7/km˛ (462.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.72% White, 0.00% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 362 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 30.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.95.


In the borough the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.4 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $27,569, and the median income for a family is $34,375. Males have a median income of $30,347 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $15,674. 17.3% of the population and 17.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.1% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
