Belize Government Institutions (2873 words)
The governor general must be a citizen of Belize and he or she serves at the pleasure of the queen, not subject to a fixed term of office.
Belize's National Assembly is a bicameral legislature composed of an elected House of Representatives and an appointed Senate.
To be eligible for either chamber, a person must be a citizen of Belize, be at least eighteen years old, and have resided in Belize for at least one year immediately prior to his or her nomination (to the House) or appointment (to the Senate).
Date set for Belize General Elections (1281 words)
Belize needs a government with a fresh mandate, not one nearing the end of its term and preoccupied with elections, to face the many new problems resulting from unfolding world events beyond our control.
The municipal elections must, by law, be held on that date, and holding both on the same day will save money and energy, since we do not have to duplicate the enormous expenditure in financial and human resources necessary to conduct elections.
The people of Belize do not need to be treated to a parade of lies, misrepresentations, slander, abuse and violence to decide how to exercise their sacred right to vote for the representatives of their choice.
