After a particularly brutal civil war in which rebels were known to hack off children's limbs, Sierra Leone is holding presidential elections that mark a return to normality.

Britain sent 1,000 troops to Sierra Leone in May 2000 to rescue foreign nationals when RUF rebels seemed on the verge of capturing the capital, Freetown.
