Bligh is a highly diverse electorate, as it contains both some of the wealthiest suburbs of Sydney, along the edge of the harbour, as well as some of the city's most disadvantaged areas, such as those around Redfern. This has had the effect of making Bligh a marginal electorate, although as the wealthier suburbs outnumber the poorer suburbs, it has tended to be Liberal-leaning. The electorate's tendency to be conservative may have changed in recent years, however; popular left-leaning independent Clover Moore, a champion of the disadvantaged, defeated the incumbent Liberal member in 1988 and has easily held the seat ever since.
