Origionally considered to be a notionally conservative seat, Union Organiser Poole won the seat with an unusually high 14.6% swing. At the 2004 state election the National Party agreed their coalition partner, the Liberal Party, should contest the seat. The Liberal Party endorsed former Gold Coast Mayor Ray Stevens while the Labor Party again endorsed Poole. Poole suffered a slight swing but was again returned.
