Carved out of the northern part of the former seat of Nerang and the southern segment of the seat of Albert in the 2001 redistribution, the first candidates to contest the seat were the Nationals Bill Baumann, the then member of Parliament for Albert and Labor's Robert Poole. Origionally considered to be a notionally conservative seat, Union Organiser Poole won the seat with an unusually high 14.6% swing. At the 2004 state election the National Party agreed their coalition partner, the Liberal Party, should contest the seat. The Liberal Party endorsed former Gold Coast Mayor Ray Stevens while the Labor Party again endorsed Poole. Poole suffered a slight swing but was again returned. Since being returned in 2004 Poole has spent much of his time out of the state, mainly in Thailand, creating a controversy for the already embattled Beattie Labor Government.
