Barkly was generally marginal, but conservative-leading for many years, and Ian Tuxworth, as a high-profile incumbent member, was able to hold it. He was nearly toppled in 1987 after founding the rebel NT Nationals party, forcing a by-election after the Court of Disputed Returns overruled his tiny win. Two years later, Barkly received a redistribution that was largely hostile to Tuxworth, bring in several pro-Australian Labor Party indigenous communities. This tipped the balance soundly in the ALP's favour, and Tuxworth jumped ship, attempting to contest Goyder and losing. Barkly has been held by the ALP ever since, first by Maggie Hickey, who served as Opposition Leader for several years, and then by Elliot McAdam. It was the third safest ALP-held electorate in the Territory after the 2001 election.
