By navigating through an EPG on a receiving device, typically a televisionscreen or radio display, users can see more information about the current program or about future programs. If the device is capable of it, an EPG can enable one-touch recording of the program.
An EPG allows the viewer to take advantage of features such as program summaries, search by subject or channel, immediate access to the selected program, reminder, and parental control functions.
EPGs are typically broadcast within the broadcast stream (included in teletext, like MHP), or alongside it in a special data channel. Users of some systems, notably TiVo, use a dial-up modem to retrieve EPG listings from a third-party server.

When EPGs are connected to PVRs, or personal video recorders they enable a viewer to plan his or her viewing and record broadcast programs to a hard disk for later viewing.

Guide Plus+ (in Europe), TV Guide On Screen (in Northern America) or G-Guide (in Japan) is an interactive electronicprogrammeguide system that is used in consumer electronics products, such as television sets, DVD recorders, personal video recorders, and other digital television devices.
The updated programme listings are provided to users free-of-charge, regardless of whether they receive their television signal from an over-the-air broadcast or via cable TV.
While the TV Guide service also requires software in the TV or other device, and licensing fees (currently $9 per device paid by the manufacturer) or royalties to be paid to Gemstar, it also offers a more complete solution for broadcast television, more like digital satellite or digital cable.
