An electronic switching system digitizes analog signals from subscribers' loops, and interconnects them by assigning the digitized signals to the appropriate time slots. It may also interconnect digital data or voice circuits.

When the time sharing switch is used as the first switch, the input data 211 is received from a terminal as the time division multiplex input, while the output data 212 is supplied to the output highway connected with the second switch.
When the time sharing switch is used as the third switch, the input data 211 is received from the output highway of the second switch, while the output data 212 is supplied to a terminal as the time division multiplex output.
