Elena Mikhailyevna Zamolodchikova -- "Zamo" for short -- is a two-time Olympic gymnast. She was born on September 19, 1982 in Moscow, Russia, and began gymnastics at the age of six. She participated in her first major senior competition in 1999, at the World Championships, where she won the gold in vault finals -- one of her favorite events, along with the floor exercise -- and the bronze in the all-around. Elena was selected as a member of the Russian gymnastics team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She initially did not make it into the all-around or vault finals; however, she earned spots in both when Elena Produnova withdrew from the all-around and Svetlana Khorkina decided to give up her spot to Zamolodchikova. Unfortunately, she lost her chances of an all-around medal with a fall on the floor exercise. Elena had a very rough competition, she must have experienced every emotion, from nearly shellshocked with stress, to exploding with pleasure and satisfaction.
Not for Elena however, she is looking at the score board when she is marching out of the arena, and she know she made a serious error in her beam routine, and finished in fourth place for Russia.
Elena crying in the arms of her nearest rival, the incomparable dancer who enchanted the judges a few minutes earlier.
