The German Eleventh Army was formed in early 1915. It briefly fought on the Western Front during the Battle of Ypres holding the line against the allied attack. On April 22nd, it was transferred and placed with Austrian Fourth under Mackensen's command behind the Gorlice-Tarnow gap, south of the Vistula River. It continued to fight on the Eastern Front when after armistice in 1917, it was then re-deployed to the Western Front and took part in the German spring offensive in 1918. After the German surrender in November 1918, the Army was disbanded.

The 11th Army cut off the Russians from the sea the fate of the remaining Russian defenders was sealed and another 100,000 prisoners marched into captivity. For his achievements Manstein was promoted to Field Marshall. A grateful Adolf Hitler also authorized the Crimean Shield to commemorate the efforts of 11th Army. Manstein recommended 11th Army either cross the straits of Kerch and push into the Kuban to aid in the capture of Rostov or be placed into Army Group South reserve. Instead part of 11th Army, along with the heavy siege train was transferred to Army Group North. Ordered to oversee Leningrad's reduction Manstein transferred with them. The remainder of 11th Army was parceled out to Army Group Center and Army Group South. After the German disaster at Stalingrad, von Manstein was re-assigned by Hitler to commander of the newly created Army Group Don. Image File history File links The_defence_of_Sevastopol. ... By the time the Battle of Berlin began, it only had a Police Division, a Marine Division, and a Division of Panzer Grenadiers. Steiner had always been one of Hitler's favorite commanders and when Hitler was besieged in Berlin, he ordered Steiner's 11th Army to attack and relieve Berlin which was en-circled by Soviet troops. With the Soviets outnumbering his forces by a ratio of 10:1 and with a few working tanks and roughly a division's worth of experienced infantry men, Steiner chose the life of his men over the life of the leadership, and declined to attack. This prompted one of Hitler's most infamous outbursts on April 22, 1945. The 11th Army turned west and surrendered to the Allies.
