Elinvar is the name of a type of metallic alloy with a modulus of elasticity which does not vary with temperature; the name means elastically invariable. The first work in producing it was done by the same man who had invented invar, the alloy of nickel and iron which has a small temperature coefficient of expansion. The initial use of elinvar materials was in watches which required that a mechanical vibration rate not change with temperature changes. Hot metal work from a blacksmith In chemistry, a metal (Greek: Metallon) is an element that readily forms ions (cations) and has metallic bonds, and metals are sometimes described as a lattice of positive ions (cations) in a cloud of electrons. ...
An alloy is a combination, either in solution or compound, of two or more elements, which has a combination of at least one metal, and where the resultant material has metallic properties. ...
Elasticity has meanings in two different fields: In physics and mechanical engineering, the theory of elasticity describes how a solid object moves and deforms in response to external stress. ...
Temperature is the physical property of a system which underlies the common notions of hot and cold; the material with the higher temperature is said to be hotter. ...
Invar is an alloy of iron (64%) and nickel (36%) with some carbon and chromium. ...
