Encyclopedia > Elisabeth Baessler

Elisabeth Else Baessler (or Baesler) was an SS woman at the Buchenwald concentration camp during the last months of World War II.

Elisabeth Baessler was born in Essen, Germany on February 7, 1923. In 1944 Buchenwald established a subcamp in Essen, so she applied with the SS office there, and on July 10, 1944, she was accepted as one of only sixteen women into the true SS ranks, not the female SS auxiliary (SS Gefolge). On July 10, 1944, she arrived at the Buchenwald concentration camp near Erfurt. Elisabeth continued her service in the camp until its evacuation in April 1945, when she returned to Essen. She has never been prosecuted for crimes in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
