Built in Aberdeen, Scotland as a merchant vessel in the time when the use of steam-powered ships was overtaking sailing ships, the Elissa survived numerous ownership changes, renamings, and modifications, including the installation of an engine and the incremental removal of all her rigging and masts. In 1975, she was purchased by the Galveston Historical Foundation (http://www.galvestonhistory.org/), her current owners, who began the process of restoration and repair.
In 1979, after a year of repairs to her hull in Greece, the Elissa was towed to Galveston, Texas, where the restoration process continued.
Elissa was born in Deir al-Ahmar and raised amidst the spectacular, natural scenery of the Bekaa valley.
To crown the year, Elissa was included in the anthology book '100 Pioneers of Lebanon', alongside artists such as Fairuz, Wadih al-Safi, as well as many other celebrities who have left their mark on the Lebanese cultural, political and social landscape.
Elissa ended the year with a bang, when she inaugurated the opening of Kuwait's Virgin Megastore with Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the famous stores.
