Elizabeth is a town located in Wirt County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 994. It is the county seat of Wirt County6.


Geography

Elizabeth is located at 39°3'46" North, 81°23'44" West (39.062852, -81.395529)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 km˛ (0.5 mi˛). 1.2 km˛ (0.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 11.32% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 994 people, 408 households, and 261 families residing in the town. The population density is 799.6/km˛ (2,091.3/mi˛). There are 466 housing units at an average density of 374.8/km˛ (980.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 99.20% White, 0.10% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 408 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 33.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $25,114, and the median income for a family is $30,104. Males have a median income of $24,306 versus $17,813 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,704. 23.8% of the population and 20.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.0% of those under the age of 18 and 18.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
