Elk County (standard abbreviation: EK) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 3,261. The county seat is at Howard.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,684 km˛ (650 mi˛). 1,676 km˛ (647 mi˛) of it is land and 8 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census˛ of 2000, there are 3,261 people, 1,412 households, and 923 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (5/mi˛). There are 1,860 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.06% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,412 households out of which 24.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 6.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.60% are non-families. 32.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.84.


In the county the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 20.00% from 25 to 44, 26.50% from 45 to 64, and 25.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,267, and the median income for a family is $34,148. Males have a median income of $28,580 versus $16,219 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,066. 13.80% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.80% of those under the age of 18 and 15.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
