Elk Rapids is a village located in Antrim County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,700. The village is located within Elk Rapids Township.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 4.4 km˛ (1.7 mi˛) of it is land and 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 17.33% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,700 people, 769 households, and 483 families residing in the village. The population density is 390.7/km˛ (1,014.3/mi˛). There are 1,056 housing units at an average density of 242.7/km˛ (630.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 97.00% White, 0.29% African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 769 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.83.


In the village the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $31,382, and the median income for a family is $45,179. Males have a median income of $30,845 versus $23,167 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,735. 8.2% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Elk Rapids Township sits on the east shore of the Grand Traverse Bay about 15 miles north of Traverse City and just over 30 miles south of Charlevoix.
Regionally, Elk Rapids Township is within twenty minutes of Traverse City, the hub city of the area.
It borders Elk Lake, one of the Chain of Lakes of Antrim County, containing 78 miles of navigable waters, and the harbor at Elk Rapids Village, which leads to Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan and thereafter to all the Great Lakes and their tributaries.
