Elk Rapids Township is a township located in Antrim County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,741. The village of Elk Rapids is located within the township.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 28.3 km˛ (10.9 mi˛). 18.4 km˛ (7.1 mi˛) of it is land and 9.9 km˛ (3.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 34.92% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,741 people, 1,206 households, and 811 families residing in the township. The population density is 148.8/km˛ (385.3/mi˛). There are 1,763 housing units at an average density of 95.7/km˛ (247.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 97.67% White, 0.22% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,206 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.78.


In the township the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $36,250, and the median income for a family is $48,450. Males have a median income of $32,386 versus $23,403 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,970. 7.6% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.6% of those under the age of 18 and 9.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The high lands in the southern portion of the township are covered with fruit orchards and the northern end is mainly forests, lakes and wetlands.
Regionally, Elk Rapids Township is within twenty minutes of Traverse City, the hub city of the area.
It borders Elk Lake, one of the Chain of Lakes of Antrim County, containing 78 miles of navigable waters, and the harbor at Elk Rapids Village, which leads to Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan and thereafter to all the Great Lakes and their tributaries.
